Dr. G's Memory Vest

Drgsfield

My father, “Dr. G”, was an intellectual force.   A respected microbiologist, the FDA would call on his expertise as they considered cases of drug safety.  He could identify rhododendron species and hybrids at a glance and give you the lineage for the latter from memory.  His recall of voices heard once or twice would astound my sisters and I.  When we were teenagers he could recognize Sting or Van Morrison’s voices despite his disdain for Rock and Roll.  As for his beloved classical music, his knowledge was encyclopedic.

We were told that the stronger the mind the longer an individual can hide the decline in their memory from their family and loved ones. Perhaps that is why this brilliant man seemed to vanish so quickly.

As I’ve shared my father’s story I’ve learned how many other families are dealing with similar situations.  Few people are lucky enough not to have been touched by Alzheimer’s or dementia. For some it is a parent for others a spouse, grandparent, brother, sister, aunt or uncle.  Dr. G’s Memory Vest is my small way of trying to help.

I have chosen to have the donations go to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation.  When my father passed away in September, this is one of the charities that my family chose for donations in his memory.

The Fisher Center is the world's largest research team leading the battle against Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. They fund over 85 scientists across the United States, with partnerships and collaborations in 17 other countries, all under the direction of Nobel laureate Dr. Paul Greengard at The Rockefeller University in New York City.  Of every dollar raised, 94 cents goes directly to research programs.

Achillea

Achillea_door

Teresa said of this sock, "It kind of reminds me of a yarrow stalk with all it's leaves."  This awoke the gardener in me.  The botanical name for yarrow is "Achillea".  It is named for Achilles of Greek myth; magnificent warrior, hero of Troy.  I'm sure you've all heard the story, his only vulnerability was his heel, and this eventually led to his demise.  I thought this would be the perfect name for a sock.  And so, Achillea it is, the flower or the hero, your choice.

Anna's Socks

Door_anna

The stitch pattern in Ann's Sock reminds me of the tufted back on my grandmother's cobalt blue couch.  I have fond memories of  holidays at my grandparents' home with delicious scents wafting from the kitchen.  I have named this sock in honor of my late grandmother Anna.

Augusta

I named these socks for the famous golf course where the Masters tournament is played.   The color of the yarn contrasted with the coral cuff remind me of the beautiful fairways accented by gloriously blooming azaleas that Augusta National is known for.

Augusta is knit toe up.

Belvedere

1810545988_cb9dcbff09

1810546136_cb91c9c0a1

Worked from the top down, Belvedere is a richly textured pattern.
The twisted stitches add stretch and interest.  Unlike most of my patterns, the instructions for these socks are written for DPN's.

I have included two sizes, S/M (7.5-9.5" circumference at foot and ankle) and M/L (8.5-11.5" circumference at foot and ankle).   My daughter was the model in the photos and the sock shown is the S/M.  Her foot measures 8.5" at the ball of the foot and she wears a US size 9.5-10 shoe.  There is a lot of stretch in the pattern due to the twisted stitches, so the S/M even fits my wide  (9.25" at the ball, US size 8.5) foot.

Please note that due to the large repeat on this pattern, there was no way to increase the stitch count for the larger size without substantially changing the look of the pattern.  Therefor I increased the size by altering the gauge.  For this reason, Medium Weight Socks That Rock will work better for the M/L size.  The S/M was made with Lightweight STR.

Price $5.50 USD

Confection

 Confection_1

Confection_2

A bit of confection to warm the neck, this sport weight cowl is worked from the top down.  (Although if you’d like to flip it and wear the rope edging on the bottom the knitting police won’t come after you.)  Confection has a twisted, rope-like edging under the chin, while waves of garter stitch frame delicate fans.

I can’t decide if this cowl reminds me of an ornate cake or the swags of a circus tent.  Either way knit in the Plucky Knitter’s Cashmerino Sport it is a decadent adornment for chilly days.

Eloise

Eloise_3

Eloise is one of my favorite children’s book characters.  Her spunk and carefree style are something all adults could do with a bit more of.  When Khris of Chewy Spaghetti sent the yarn for me to design this sock with, I fell in love with the color name, “Impudent’.  The most impudent little girl I could think of is Eloise, and so I named this sock for her.  Be a little naughty when you wear these!

Linea

Linea

Linea is a lacy summer top.  Fabric knit from bamboo yarn has a lovely drape. The elastic in the Esprit yarn adds stability to the bodice, which is knit at a tight gauge for the yarn. The armhole depth and shoulder straps are designed to allow a bra or camisole to be worn underneath.  The top is knit in one piece from the bottom up.
